World Records
1n 1972 the International Sailing Federation formed the World Speed Sailing Records Council (WSSRC) to be the international body responsible for ratifying and record all sailing records from the fasted speed over 500 metres to the fastest time around the world.

The Forty Foot DivisionAnyone who has watched the start of the Sydney to Hobart or any other yacht race can tell you that bigger boats are much faster than smaller boats. That is why there is a greater than 60 foot division, a 60 foot division and a 40 foot division

Westbound verses EastboundThere are separate records for Westbound and Eastbound records because a boat traveling East is going with the currents and the prevailing winds. The Westbound course is much slower and more demanding because the sailor must battle against the wind and the currents

Why is the 40 ft record unbrokenIts not for want of trying. The last attempt was in 2015 - 2016 by Bill Hatfield. Bill nearly made it all the way but struck trouble rounding the notorious Cape Horn his boat was badly damaged and he was thrown into the icy water. Luckily Bill was able to limp back to safety at the Falkland Islands.
